About the Artist

Laura K. Bell

Following a successful 25-year scientific career Laura and her husband bought a home in the mountains and relocated from the Northern Virginia area to Flat Rock, NC. Laura spent the majority of her scientific career as a molecular biologist developing cervical cancer tests for women without access to healthcare. Her older sister was diagnosed with cervical cancer and as a result she dedicated her career to this field. Never having previously painted, one day in 2017, she picked up a paint brush and never looked back.

As a painter she finds that the bright vibrant colors of sea, land, and sky fascinate her and are motivation for her current work. The vibrant colors in nature provide a connection and provoke emotion.

She is currently exploring watercolors and acrylics in combination with pen and ink and plans to develop her work in oils as well. Her grandmother, whom she is named after, was a self-taught oil painter and she finds that she has her innate love of trees and water. Her subject matter tends toward nature with a love of landscapes and beautiful skies.

She is currently collaborating with Miriam Hughes on painting a bear for Downtown Hendersonville's Bearfootin' Art Walk.

Laura lives with her husband Gary and their two dogs, Nala and Beaumont. Her studio by the pool has now officially replaced her lab and she has retired her lab coat.
